ACM Transactions on Modeling and Computer Simulation

Special Issue on Web-Based Modeling and Simulation

Ernest H. Page, Guest Editor

Web-based simulation is quickly emerging as an area of significant interest for both simulation researchers and simulation practitioners. This interest in web-based simulation is a natural outgrowth of the proliferation of the World-Wide Web (WWW) and its attendant technologies, e.g. HTML, HTTP, CGI, etc., and the surging popularity of, and reliance on, computer simulation as a problem solving and decision support tool.

The appearance of the network-friendly programming language, Java, and of distributed object technologies like the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and the Object Linking and Embedding /Component Object Model (OLE/COM) have had particularly acute effects on the state of simulation practice.

While many of the artifacts of web-based simulation are technologies -- infrastructure -- and are therefore inherently superficial to the fundamental challenges of computer simulation, when viewed in their totality, these technologies have the potential to significantly alter the way we conceive, develop, manipulate and apply simulation as a problem solving technique and a decision support tool.

The scope of this Special Issue of TOMACS includes the following topics:

Of particular interest are papers that describe quantifiable impacts of the application of web technologies on simulation model development and use. We also encourage survey papers that synthesize state-of-the-art research results in a unified treatment of a given topic, thereby providing researchers and advanced practitioners with an introduction to developments on that topic.

The submission deadline is March 31, 1999. Submitted papers must not have been previously published, and they must not be simultaneously under consideration for publication in TOMACS and another journal. All papers will be reviewed fairly, thoroughly, and expeditiously. Accepted papers may appear in volume 9 (Oct. 1999) of TOMACS. See

for current editorial policy, instructions to authors, and additional information.

Manuscripts in Postscript format should be submitted electronically using the form
