Instructions to Authors

Submission of a manuscript to TOMACS is a representation that the paper has neither been published nor submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission is also the representation that the work has been approved for open publication if performed under an official sponsorship requiring such an approval. TOMACS accepts submissions for publication as full scientific papers or technical notes. A technical note typically deals with a more restricted topic or treatment of a topic than does a full paper. The letter of transmittal should clearly indicate that the submission is a technical note; otherwise, the assumption is that the submission is to be considered as a full scientific paper.

Procedures

TOMACS accepts papers electronically. Authors need to be able to use a web browser, and an ftp program. To submit a paper electronically, prepare a postscript file containing the paper and a separate ASCII file containing:

  1. Title.
  2. Abstract.
  3. Keywords.
  4. Any other relevant information

The above information should also be included in the paper itself, along with acknowledgment of any funding sources. The postscript file should be formatted for U.S.-sized 8.5 by 11 inch paper. Papers should be double spaced, not longer than 35 pages, and prepared with a professional quality word processing system. Once the paper and cover material are prepared, submit the paper following directions found at this web site.

Republication

ACM maintains its policy of not republishing works, whether copyrighted by ACM or by others, except under limited conditions where an editor determines there is significant benefit in republication. Contributions appearing in ACM journals are normally original papers which have not been published elsewhere. Publication of a paper which has been widely disseminated (e.g., in a conference proceedings) is permitted only if the Editor judges that the revision contains significant amplification or clarification of the original material or there is some significant additional benefit to be gained. Any prior appearance should be noted on the title page and it is the obligation of the author to inform the Editor-in-Chief in the cover material if there are any circumstances concerning the contribution that bear on this policy. Submission of a manuscript that is under review by TOMACS to another journal or conference without approval of the Editor-in-Chief is considered to be unethical and, when discovered, will result in immediate rejection by TOMACS.

Formatting Documents

Papers accepted for publication in TOMACS may be submitted electronically to ACM for formatting. See the guidelines for Electronically Submitting Accepted Articles to ACM. We suggest that you read these guidelines prior to submission and try to adhere to them as much as possible (e.g., by using the suggested electronic styles) when preparing the document for submission. In any case, papers should be double spaced and prepared with a professional quality word processing system.
